ADAT Test Day Checklist: What to Bring and What to Expect

The ADAT is a long appointment, and test day logistics are where small mistakes become big problems. A name mismatch, a forgotten ID, or a missed break can derail months of preparation. This checklist is the one we wish every candidate had taped to their mirror the night before.

Before You Leave Home

  • Confirm your appointment time and center address.
  • Check that your primary ID has your photo, signature, and is not expired.
  • Bring a second ID with your name and signature.
  • Leave phones, watches, notes, and study materials in the car or at home.
  • Eat a real meal and bring a small snack for the break.
  • Sleep matters more than a final cram. Stop studying by early evening.

At Check-In

Report at least 30 minutes early. Pearson VUE will take your photo and a fingerprint or palm-vein scan. You'll store your belongings in a locker and receive a laminated note board and a marker. Eyeglasses may be inspected. You cannot bring food, drinks, phones, or study materials into the testing room.

The Appointment Flow

Your appointment follows a fixed sequence. The optional tutorial runs 15 minutes; skip it if you already know the interface. Biomedical Sciences follows at 95 minutes for 80 items. Then comes the first optional 10-minute break, but remember: once the break starts, the prior section locks and you can't go back. Clinical Sciences is next at 90 minutes for 80 items with Patient Boxes. The second optional 10-minute break follows, again locking the prior section. DRI comes last at 45 minutes for 40 items with Research Boxes. A 5-minute post-test survey is optional.

Total appointment time is about 4.5 hours. The timer pauses while items load. Some items are unscored experimental questions that look identical to scored ones. We see this every cycle: candidates stress over one impossible item and don't realize it was probably unscored.

Break Strategy

Take both breaks. Use them for the restroom, a sip of water, and a small snack. The rule that matters most: once a break begins, you cannot return to the previous section. Don't let anxiety make you rush back. A two-minute break extension isn't worth the fatigue you'll carry into the next 80 or 40 items.

Fatigue Is the Quiet Theme

By the DRI section, you've already done 160 items. That's exactly where time pressure and mental load peak. The candidates who train for this don't just study content; they sit full-length simulations in the same format. Full-length practice trains the stamina so test day feels like rehearsal, not a debut.

If Something Goes Wrong

If you experience a technical issue, stop and report it immediately. Continuing to test generally waives the right to a remedy. Documented unresolved issues can sometimes earn a courtesy retest within 30 days that voids the original score. For day-of emergencies such as illness or family crisis, contact testingproblems@ADA.org within 5 business days with documentation.

Results Window

There's no unofficial score at the test center. Results are posted to your DENTPIN account within 3 to 4 weeks, though many students report about 2 weeks. Score reports include all four scores: Overall, Biomedical, Clinical, and DRI. Every score send includes your full testing history, so a weak attempt is permanently visible. Most students don't realize this until it's too late and they're staring at a score they wish they could hide.

ADAT test day is a logistics event as much as an academic one. Arrive early, match your ID name exactly, take both breaks, and treat the 4.5-hour appointment like a stamina sport. The candidates who feel worst walking out often score best, so trust your preparation and execute the checklist.
